Healthy, balanced Misal made from different lentils for the perfect meal !!
Misal is a lentil stew from the state of Maharashtra. This is usually be served for breakfast or as snack. Mainly this is eaten with Pav a kind of soft bread that is toasted with butter. But I like to eat this with any kind of bread.I love making this for breakfast and serve with some warm toasted bread and at night I just eat it like soup without any carbs. It is so filling, tasty and a balance meal in itself. For people who are looking out for carb free good and protein rich recipe then this is something to really watch out for. For people who want to avoid carb totally can skip the potatoes too.The lentils too can be altered according to your choice. Normally the lentils like the mothbeans ,yellowpeas are soaked overnight and allowed to sprout. Yes sprouted seeds are used but if you are short of time , you can do away with the sprouting as well. The sprouted beans are then cooked till soft. The stew is basically a melange of different spices especially the goda Masala which gives this dish a distinctive taste.I always buy goda masala from a small maharastrian food outlet in Bangalore but ofcourse you can make your own spice mix too.
In this recipe , I have used chickpeas, mothbeans and yellow peas. These lentils go well together when cooked and the rest of the ingredients add great flavour to the stew.
1.5 cups of boiled lentils
1 potato boiled & cubed
1 big onion finely chopped
1 big tomato chopped
2 tablespoons coriander chopped
handful of sev
1 teaspoon turmeric
2 teaspoons red chilli powder
2 tablespoons goda masala
1 tablespoon ginger grated
2 tablespoons oil
salt to taste
Tamarind water can be used while cooking the stew instead of lemon.
Usually the stew is very watery , but I prefer slightly thicker version. So adjust according to your preference.
